Small Claims I read was set at max of $3000. (Michigan). By the information in grey above this area is says General Cival claims under $7000.

Is general cival claims the step above small claims?

The couple owes me $6,735, not adding court fee's, for a year now :( . They have made no attempts at repaying me despite all the "promises they would".

Would it better to sue them each for the $3000 limit in small claims or to go to the next step higher? Do I have to use an attorney for the next level?

It's not so much the money, though I could use it to pay the loans I had to take to cover them, it's the point of showing them they can not just use people/take advantage of people's kindness and have not remorse or not hold them responsible for their actions.

Thanks in advance for any advice given :)

Sounds like you have an issue that needs to go before the civil court rather than small claims. Splitting the debt as you suggested isn't very practical. You do not HAVE TO use an attorney in civil court, but it certainly would help. If you win then you could ask for legal costs. Before you go that far consider whether the couple is likely to pay if ordered by the court... or whether they will even show.
