Small Claims court question I think

My friend needed to borrow some money from me about 4 yrs ago. I know it's a long time ago. He owes me $1700 of the $2000 I lent him, although he hasn't given me any money in over 3 years. I've asked him numerous times to pay me back, and he always says he will, but never has.
I go to school in Boston, and he lives in my home state of New Jersey. Recently, he disconnected his phone and I'm not able to get in touch with him in any way. I've tried other avenues of communication but he never contacts me. I'm fed up with him dodging me. He's not my friend if he would do this to me.
I'm wondering if I can take him to small claims court to get my money back. I have multiple witnesses that know I've lent him the money and that he still owes me a balance.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take him to small claims court.....That is your best bet if he is not cooperating....Just get his current address so he can be served. Sue him in the city he lives......and get ready with your witnesses. If you win the judgment, it would be a good start before you start seeing if you would be able to collect the money or if he complies.
