Someone is trying to take me to small claims court over a trip that happened about 2 years ago. He bought both tickets on his credit card, i paid him cash for my ticket before we left. He has a lot of money, refuses to stay at cheap hotels and booked a very expensive room in japan, before we left i told him i cannot afford this and he said "oh i will take care of the hotel charges dont worry about it, i just cant stand cheap places.." so we left for the trip with that specific understanding.

its impossible to be around him anymore because of his drug habits. I havent been answering his calls etc... and now hes writing me emails saying i owe him 2000 dollars for a planet ticket/hotel fees or hes taking legal action.

He has taken people to small claims court before and bragged about getting extra money from it, somehow i didint see this coming but im not sure what i can do to protect myself here. I dont owe him 2000 dollars, and i flat out do not HAVE 2000 dollars,i am a student with a part time job. I appreciate any advice

It is a he said/he said situation. You went to Japan - per your posting, not against your will and didn't seem to have tried to stay at a cheap hotel there on your own. If you have any evidence that you had agreed with him that you would not be responsible for any charges from the trip, you have a defense here; however, it will be up to you to make your case with the magistrate to show that you are not liable for the charges that he is bringing upon you. Good Luck!

All i have are some old emails one in particular he mentions covering the hotel costs, is this something that would help? im assuming i print a copy of it and bring it to court, other than that i have nothing

That is going to help. You should gather testimony of witnesses (if any) to enhance the case. Good Luck!
