Small Claims Threats

Are you the actual landlord?

If not and you did not request approval from the landlord to repair these things yourself, you may find yourself in hotter water than your roommate threatening to sue you.

And filing in small claims court will probably cost the former roommate more than he's trying to win back from you.

Thanks for the reply. Not the landlord but the building manager is aware of the situation (as I have been completely honest with him about everything). In fact, at the request of my roommate he did a brief walk through and noted the same issues that I did. He was the one who we asked to get an estimate of of what management would charge to paint if they sent their people to paint (as they do not do anything when only one person moves because the other party is remaining). My girl and I got permission to paint (and were given the specific shade of paint we could use. We sanded the excess spackle, repainted according to our limitations, and left the room in better condition that my ex-roommate left it, if not close to the original condition when we moved in.
