Sold Air Force Reservist car, he disappeared

I sold my "friend" a car in may for 5000. He gave me 500 and disappeared. I've tried contacting the Air Force and they will not help me. I am lien holder on the car. I don't know what else to do. I've contacted a lawyer and he says I have to find him. I've tried people finder and have had no luck. Is it legal to register the car back in my name and then report it stolen? If I did this, what would then happen? I am getting desperate, any advice would be helpful.

If you have a lien on the title, then he can't sell it until you release the lien.
