Sold car, new owners have not gotten new plates

We recently purchased a new vehicle and sold our old car to my in laws. We left the license plates on, thinking they would be prompt in changing them over. No such luck. It's been over two months and we have asked them repeatedly to get the plates changed over.

Well, the car is due for an emissions test and we got the notice because it's still in our name. And I got a nice little note from the Illinois Tollway in the mail stating there are three missed toll violations recorded on this vehicle which we no longer own. But shame on us, we did not take the plates off the car before we sold it, which I know now I should have done.

What can I do here? I'm rather peeved because the Illinois Tollway said its my responsibility and if I dont pay it they can suspend my license. I want these plates out of my name. The girl from the Tollway said I can call the DMV and have them take the plates out of my name. How's this possible, the title was signed over to the in laws in May.

This situation has gotten really ridiculous because I didn't take the plates off the car. Short of going over to their house and pulling our plates off the car now, what else can we do?

Call the DMV and see if they can take the plates out of your name-- If this was me I would go over there with a screw driver and take the plates off the car myself and hand them the bills for the toll charges--

Call the DMV and see if they can issue a temporary plate to your in-laws. There may be a fee for this, but it might well be worth it for you to cover this.
