a few years ago, I sold my car to a family friend with the expectation of her paying the remaining balance of $4K. We had a verbal agreement and I paid off the remaining balance so the title could be signed over to her mother - the title had to be transferred to mother in order for the vehicle to be covered by insurance.

Payments were made to me off and on for about six months until the family friend totaled the vehicle - no payments have been made since.

Would my case stand up in small claims court?? Or no, because of no written contract?? One other tidbit...I only put down $500 on the title for the value of the vehicle, so they wouldn't have to pay an absurd amount for taxes.

Thanks!

BTW - no longer friends because of this very issue.

You committed fraud.

You told the state you sold the car for $500, yet you want to reap $4000?

You can recover only $500 in small claims.

I suspect you have already received that amount over these last few years?

Let this one go, dude!!!

You'll only be cutting your own throat to pursue this.

In the future, don't lie on official documents! They wouldn't have to pay an "absurd" amount of taxes they would have to pay the LEGAL amount of taxes.
