Son cuts another's sweater

My kindergarten son made a small cut in another child's hood on their hoodie sweatshirt. The other parents are claiming that this is a $50 sweatshirt and we owe them the full amount. Is this true? Do I owe them the full amount?

I want to be fair but $50 seems a lot for a small less than 1 inch cut.

she is not entitled to the replacement value, but the value of the sweater at the time it was ruined.

Personally I would offer to buy her son another one, try to find one on sale somewhere or give her 20.00.
