On June 3rd, 2006 I bought a Sony LCD rear projection TV model #kds-r60xbr1, and connected a Sony DVD player model #xxxx via the HDMI out. This Sony DVD player in conjunction with the Sony TV kds-r60xbr1 was able to display the a picture along with sound. In the summer of 2007, the Sony DVD player would no longer work in conjunction with the Sony TV as a picture would not be displayed. The Sony was alternatively connected with component cables, which resolved the display issue. Subsequent to this event, I purchased the Xbox 360 Microsoft HD DVD player which connects into the XBox via a USB cable and the Xbox connects to the Sony TV by HDMI cable. When a HD DVD or standard dvd is placed in the HD DVD player a message would display on the TV that read, "HDCP Link not Found". I first called Microsoft and next called Sony Technical Support as the TV still carried the manufacturers warranty. At that time, I asked the service representative if the TV could not be fixed what would be my recourse? I was told that the TV would be replaced.
After the phone call to Sony, a Authorized Service Technician was sent to my home. When the Authorized Service Technician arrived to the home, he brought a new HD DVD player made by Panasonic, and hooked it up to the HDMI in port on the Sony TV. He was able to get the menu to display, but when trying to play a the HD DVD movie, the movie would not display. The Service Technician dismissed the fact that his player would not play on my TV based on the fact that the player was in his truck for several days and may have been defective due to the extreme heat. The Technician called into to Sony and between Sony Technical Support and the Technician determined that because how the Xbox HD DVD player is hooked up [HD DVD Player via USB to Xbox, XBOX to Sony TV via HDMI out] that the Microsoft Unit was the cause for the link error and not the Sony TV itself. As such, Sony stated that my only recourse would be to buy a new HD DVD player or to write the Sony Executive Review Committee in order for the committee to review and decide on the path forward on whether I get a new TV or not etc.
A few months later, now out of warranty, I bought a Toshiba HD DVD Player [model number to be added] and figured it would work. Connected the Toshiba HD DVD player via the HDMI out to my Sony's HDMi in port. As in the past cases, the setup menu displays but when the movie is played, the movie fails to display on the SONY TV. I called Sony technical Service back, and that continue to maintain that the TV is not the cause that all the DVD players I am using are not compatible with the TV.
All three DVD players, Sony XXX, Microsoft XBOX 360 HD DvD Player, and the Toshiba player were all connected to my other two HD TVs and all three work in out of the box condition. What I mean to say is, I made no special setting changes etc, they just work. Yet Sony, maintains that it is the the players not their TV. When I ask Sony to please provide me with the name, manufacturer, model number etc of precisely what will work with my Sony TV, Sony tells me that they are unable to provide that information.
In my opinion, Sony has not resolved the issue with their TV. This is not a new issue, this is an issue that was under warrenty. The claim that their TVS are HDCP complaint yet the TV I have fails to display a HD picture via the two HDMI ports. I paid for this TV [3300.00] by opening a Sony charge card as 18 months same as cash which is due in full by the end of this month or I get slapped with all that interest if I dont pay it. I feel like Sony got away with their responsibility, and I am inclined to not allow this to happen. I want to not pay my bill, but I know thats not right of me either, plus if I dont I will get negative reporting on my credit account.
So I am left with possibly filling suite against the company. I would appreciate any feedback. if I need to consult with a lawyer, what kind of lawyer would I seek?
