Hi, I know it was extremely stupid but earlier this night I was driving with my friend following me and we came to a red light next to each other. When the light turned green I floored it and accelerated to about 50mph (35mph zone) with my friend following close behind me. A cop pulled out of nowhere behind me and so I pulled over and so did my friend. Once she had stopped and gotten my license and registration, She called for another car to come to stop behind my friend's car. She told me to get out of the car and asked me why she stopped me. I said because I peeled out back there. She asked "who won" and I answered, "me I guess" She then proceeded to pat me down and then gave me a 23109 speed contest violation. My firend also got a "speed contest" ticket. The ticket said I was doing 55+ but I'm pretty sure I only hit 50. The street was completely clear in front of us, and there was no traffic in the way but it was at about midnight. I read the vehicle code which said that the fine for "speed contest" was no less than "355$ and no more than 1000$", but the fine for "display of speed" was "no more than $500". Do you think I could get a smaller fine by arguing that it should be considered a display of speed since it wasn't really an official race? I could say that I just peeled out at the green light and my friend followed me. Also, does the court even have to know that it was my friend who was driving the other car. I told the cop that it was my friend but in hindsight should have said it was a stranger. Also I'm really worried about my insurance. Will the insurance company only see the points I get on my record or will they find out that I was "street racing" and jack up my prices especially high?
I'm 19 years old and I was driving my dad's car which I'm insured for. Actually I accidentally gave the cop my travel insurance slip, instead of my AAA proof of insurance. I don't know if that will make any difference with anything.
Any help any of you guys could give me would be awesome. I'm not as worried about the fine as to whether my insurance will skyrocket, because if it does my parents will probably get PISSED and stop insuring me. If i get out of this i promise never to break any traffic laws again!!!!
