Speeding in a Work Zone

I was in the left lane of a 4 lane highway in Illinois as I entered a work zone. I slowed down. However, the lane I was in was shortly ending. No one in the right lane was letting me get over, so when I saw a gap a few cars ahead, I sped up to make it in before the lane ended and thus avoid a car crash. I was then pulled over for doing 69mph in a 55mph work zone. My license is being held in bond pending a court date. What I want to know is is this situation justifiable? Should I plead not guilty? And also, what kind of fines am I looking at? My thanks for any advice.

Speeding in a work zone is usually double fines and double points. You admit that you are guilty and no you were not justified in speeding up. Actually you are lucky you were not charged with reckless. The clerk can give you the normal fine amount. This is probably serious enough to retain an attorney, especially if you already have other violations.

How will an attorney help? I don't really have any wiggle room, do I? This is my first violation.
