My jurisdiction is: North Carolina
Got a speeding ticket (first of any kind of traffic offense in 20 years) for doing 74 in a 55. I don't usually ever speed, so I'm very upset with myself.
Being that it's a misdemeanor, I've been told my license can be taken away. I've also been told to get a lawyer, but others say that I do not need one and can plead down the offense at my court date. I also do not have a lot of money and want to do the most prudent/smart/cost-effective thing. I have received lots of letters from attorneys, but seem to think they are using scare tactics. Also noticed that my birth date is wrong on ticket (off by 20 years!)...not that it makes a difference, but just an odd mistake and makes me wonder how "on the ball" the policeman was. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you
