Ok, so last month i was pulled for doing 86 in a 70 on I 40 coming back from the beach. I had my cruise set on 75 mph the whole time, but there was this old truck with loose boards and building equipment bouncing around in front of me, slowing down and speeding up, basically really scaring me. So i didn't see the hiding cop when i decided to pass him, and i got caught. I decided not to hire a lawyer but im only 17 (my ticket says 19 for some reason) and because at 15 mph over there is a 30 day license suspension, i dont know what to do. Should i try to explain why i sped (i honestly was afraid for myself and my car) adn try to get it reduced, or ask for a plea for judgement? How do i go about asking for a PFJ when i go tomorrow? Thanks a lot!

You will get a chance to talk to a clerk or the ADA.

Ask for a reduction to 9 over (no insurance points) or a PJC. Provided you have no previous convictions, they will agree and you will have to pay fines + court costs. Bring about $200 in cash, they do not take checks.

If they will not agree, ask for a continuance and come back with a lawyer.

Thank You Robbie!

Update: I have to go to a 4 hour 'safe driving class' one saturaday, and then go back to court in July with documentation saying i took the class. It's 50$ to take the class and then i have to pay the 110$ court fee, but thats it! The offense is reduced to an 'equipent offense', which is even better than asking for 9 over. I get no license or insurance points whatsoever. I'm so relieved! v Hiring a lawyer would have wasted SO MUCH MONEY. I wouldn't recommend hiring one unless you're charged with reckless or something worse.
