Good day,

I received a speeding ticket today with the officer stating I was going 53mph in a 40mph. The ticket states that vascar was used with the following information:

Miles followed .047 allow that hand righting is pretty sloppig so this may be a .647

Miles Timed 53.7

Secs Time 3.16

I know I was not going 53mph and using the provided information I cannot seem to get the math to work out to what they are claiming.

I read that vascar is distance traveled/secs and that provides you with a feet per sec that you can then use to figure out a MPH. What am I overlooking. OR is there not enough information on the ticket to allow me to see if the math is correct. Ultimately I dont care about the money I am more worried about the points.

Thanks in advance,
John

OP, use your energy and investigate if traffic school is available to you.

That is a far, far better way to ensure that you receive no points on your license.

By my math, if you were followed .047 miles in 3.16 seconds then you were traveling at 53.5mph.
Hopefully you did not go .647 miles in 3.16 seconds... that would be 737mph.

There are 3600 seconds in an hour. Divide 3.16 by 3600 to convert seconds to hours. You will get a tiny decimal worth saving in your calculator. Then divide .047m by the number you converted in order to get your speed.

You were cited at 53.7 and the math comes out to 53.5. I would bet the difference is a result of rounding the numbers one way or another, likely on the distance since it is extremely unlikely to be exact to the foot. Regardless, they dismissed the decimal and went with the flat 53. I think you will have a tough time arguing the math.

Your best bet is likely to look into traffic school and keep this off your record.
