My library just notified me that in 1991 a book checked out to a card I owned was 'lost'

They are suspending my privileges. The librarian would not give me a cost for settling the issue but "will let me know" by posting a notice of how much I owe online attached to my current card.

I suffered a robbery in 1990-91, lost id cards etc. have not seen the card since, so I assume now that it was taken, though I did not realize it then. I have since requested a new card and have never failed to return a book, though I have paid minor fines for one or two days late.

Oddly, I received no notices regarding an overdue book which would have alerted me that the old card was being used.

At the same time, I checked the 'lost' book's info...it is selling widely online for 1 cent and up (plus shipping) for 'good' used copies, and 5.98 is the internet list price.

Are there laws relating to this issue? What are my alternatives?

You might want to check the library's policies on such issues...........Call them and read about the resolution of such cases. By accepting to be a member, you accepted to their policies. So, just read more about it and work with them. Maybe they love embarrassing anyone so as to discourage others in the future.
