I recently made a mistake and stole money from my employer. I found out when I walked in on them looking at camera and they have yet to to say anything to me the last couple days. However I am afraid they will and prosecute me. My question is if I just quit can they still prosecute me?

Mighty Moose gave you great advice, especially the part about STOP STEALING and STOP LYING about it being a mistake, as you did it on purpose.

I suggest you speak with a couple local lawyers about his matter.

Its possible that the RIGHT lawyer could negotiate a settlement where you repay the money and perhaps avoid criminal charges.

Tomorrow you should meet with two or three lawyers and see what advice and/or help they can offer.

Otherwise, SHUT UP about this, if they approach you ADMIT NOTHING, say NOTHING except your lawyer has advised you to say NOTHING about anything, and then leave the premises.

Yes, you may lose your job, but that's far better than losing your freedom and being locked in a cage.

Of course they can. Why on earth would you think that you would be immune from prosecution just because you no longer worked there?
