Step parent looking to get custody

I have a step child who i have been around since he was a baby.His father and I divorced a few years ago the child is now 11years old. His mother is totally unfit she has 3 other children who my step child is forced to babysit while she goes out. my step child has told me his mom sells pills, her boyfriend has beat her in front of the children and was told by CPS that the boyfriend cannot come back, but he is there. My ex husband is not stable enough to take his child and get custody, but supports the idea of me trying to get custody. I get my stepchild every other weekend and some through the week. I support him financially and pay for all extra curricular activities, or he would not be aloud to participate because his mother cannot pay for anything for him. He needs to go to the dentist, she wont take him, he needs new glasses and cannot see out of his current ones, she won't take him. I feel so bad everytime I take him home because he doesn't want to be there. I am scared to take her to court for custody because If i lose, i will never see him again. what can I do?

Legally? Nothing. You are what is called a "legal stranger" and have no power to wrest custody as you seek. Best thing you can do Is let CPS know what is going on so they can take action to protect all the children

As a step-parent, you have minimal duties of care towards the child.

You have no rights, insofar as the child is concerned.

Once you divorced dad, you became a legal stranger to that child.
