I purchased a truck from my ex boyfriends stepdad for a cheap price due to him moving and he was going to scrap truck. I receive the title that he signed over to me at the time of money exchange with my grandfather also present as a witness. The following week I tryed registering vehicle but was unsuccessful because there was another holder on title and I needed that signature as well. Come tofind out the business was no longer around so DMV gave me additional paperwork to for me to have my exs dad the previous owner sign as well as get documention that there were no liens. At this point I wasn't in any rush, the tags are good for two years and I have no idea how to get a hold of o
the previous owner since he has moved. My boyfriend and I break up but unfortunately still are roommates and he has just been really bitter and stealing things, the signed title and bill of sale being one. The only proof of purchase I have without those documents is my grandfather. I don't know what kind of legal procedure I should take or what I can do... I need advice?

You were likely required to change the title within a period of 30 days or so after purchase. Your failure to pursue the matter at the time is not going to help you.
Your best bet is probably to be super nice to the ex and get the paperwork back. Without it you are likely up a creek.

If the truck is a huge paperweight, junk it.

Buy a better truck. I've often found it can be cheaper not to fix some problems, just let them be.

I didn't do it in the 30 days because of the other signer I needed but I had the title stamped by the DMV because I had been in there twice to try to take care of the issue.
