I came into posession an 3 items that someone else claims was stolen and rightfully belongs to them. How long after the other party knows of my posession of said item can the other party take action. Is there a statute of limitations for something like this? Or should I just give it to them. What is the right thing to do.

Well right now you could be in possession of stolen property. so if they have proof that is theirs and it was stolen, you should give it back. How did you come across it?

Do you want to know what the RIGHT thing is to do, or what the LEGAL thing is to do?

The RIGHT thing would be to give back the person's property.

The LEGAL thing would be to contact an attorney to evaluate your state's laws and the circumstances to determine if you held any criminal or civil liability. However, knowingly being in possession of stolen property is a felony in my state - it might be in yours as well.

How lucky do you feel?

More info

After I came into posession of these 3 items (concrete footprints weighing 100 lbs each) I immediatly contacted the original owners (who were delighted I found them). This was 2.5 years ago. I have made several pleadings with them to pick up the items over the past 2 years. Most recently this past February. I again told them this past May that if they did not want the items I will find someone else who does.

These items are of historical value and need to be in a museum. I contacted the owners and they said they did not want them. They told me to contact a non-profit they deal with. I contacted the NPO and recieved no response to 3 letter I sent asking them to pick up the items. The 4th letter I sent stated I assumed they were not interested being I recieved no response to any of my letters and that I would find another NPO to display them.

Send them a bill for storage.

About $3K.

You will get a response.

Well, I have already given them to another NPO which already knew the origination of these items. It is only now that the other people are making an issue of this.
