I live in Albuquerque, NM, and recently tried to purchase a $300 stationary bicycle that
was in stock, at a local well known Dept. Store. The clerks refused to sell me the bicycle,
if I didn't give them my home phone number and address. I was attempting to pay with a
well-known charge card, and was going to carry the item to my vehicle, not have it
delivered. I argued with them that they did not need that information in order to sell me the
product, and they said their company software only allowed them to conduct the sale if I gave them that information. I informed them that they had no right to demand that information of me, and that refusing to sell the product to me on that basis was a form of discrimination. They said there was nothing they could do about that.
Am I legally correct? If so, how can I hold them accountable for their policy?
