Hello,

So at (retail store) 1/18/2014 I was caught shop lifting an item on accident worth about $4.50, I bought $17 worth of groceries, had a debit card with me, and bought a fixed tire I just forgot to pay retarded i know. :(

Anyways, they escorted me to a back room asked for my name, address, SSN, date of birth, age, and took a picture of me, and made me sign this form (admission of guilt i believe), and said it was (store) confidential? They asked for my ID and said that i wasn't allowed to be at (store) that day but i could come back again. No cops were called, & I gave them all information except my SSN.

Is there any way this might show up on back ground check since no cops were called and they excorted me out? I'm a scholarship student, receive student financial aid, and want to apply to dental school next summer. On the dental school application is asks do you have any misdemeanors, felony's other than any minor traffic violations? Will I have to answer yes, and will this affect my schooling? I'm freaking out because $4.50 is definitely not worth $8,000 in scholarships and my entrance to dental school :'( it was definitely a mistake. How will this affect my background information? Also, a month after this incident I moved and don't know if anything got mailed to my past address. Should I receive a civil demand letter, or a court date? I know dental school uses a background check called certiphi prior to enrollment, and I also know that (store) uses a national retail theft database how will this affect me. Have i dodged the bullet on this one? I'm thinking since no cops were called and since (store) has a policy not to prosecute under $25 I have avoided criminal charges but how can I find out if something was mailed... i THINK I'm just freaking out even though this was like 6 months ago..

Thanks!!!!

First off you should never ever post the store name or details of theft. This is especially true since you want to hide event. You just told the world! A typical CRB will not pick this up as there were no criminal charges. It is possible that the store put your name into a retail theft database (if they subscribe to one) if so other subscribers can view this. If true your likely still fine as Colleges do not tend to be subscribers. Your big concern now is fact you put too much detail in this thread and someone could ID you. On another topic you mention "Accidental Shoplifting" I suggest you read this http://www.parentnook.com/accidental-shoplifting/ on that very subject
You should have received Civil Demand. If you moved that is why you did not get it. You might double check on that as not paying can bring forth serious long term consequences
