My wife and I just bought a used car for our daughter and they added a charge to cover what they said was a new law called the Straw Law,Were we just Scammed? J.Alison

According to TN law they can charge what they like and call it what they like as long as it's itemized in the contract.

No scam.

All you had to do was say "I don't want to pay this amount" and get up and walk out.

Here's a website that'll provide additional information on dealer laws:

PS: Two posts on the same topic is frowned upon so I deleted the other one as a duplicate. It's also not a good idea to put your email address out there.

Oh, yes, the old straw purchase SCAM when a salesman decides to FLEECE an unsuspecting POTENTIAL car buyer.

The SCAMMER tells you that with your HORRIBLE FICO score, you won't qualify for a car loan.

The SCAMMER then tells you that you need to get a co-signer, like maybe Grandma, your boyfriend, your mistress, or any other SUCKER to co-sign sign the loan, that you can't afford.

With the SUCKER, rather the co-SUCKER, the nice, SCAMMER is gonna get you approved.

I always suggest to anyone DO NOT get involved with ANY co-sign loans.

Okay, back to the SCAM that SUCKERED your trusting spouse, and you, too.

Tennessee is not a community property state.

But, when you signed as the ALLEGED co-signer, surprise YOU are the one with the loan.

If you didn't sign as a co-signer, whoever did is the one stuck with the loan.

More on the STRAW purchase, SCAM.

Grandma, or whoever got SUCKERED and/or SCAMMED into thinking he pr she was only the co-signer was duped by the DEALER-SALESMAN-SCAMMER during the entire fast paced paperwork shuffle, well she OR he was tricked into signing on the loan papers as the PRIMARY BORROWER.

Not, as said, but SCAMMED into being the PRIMARY, as in ONLY signer.

This is the core of the Straw Purchase Scam.

Weeks (in some cases HOURS or DAYS) later, the co-signer realizes he or she is the PRIMARY BORROWER.

So, the entire loan is in Grandma's once good name, your once good name, or whoever was stupid enough to allegedly co-sign.

Before I move on, NEVER co-sign anything for anyone.

If you can afford it, GIFT the needy person the money, but don't co-sign a damn thing.

moving on, mate, so, good luck trying to fix this straw purchase SCAM.

The SCAMMER has signatures on the paperwork which someone willingly signed. BUT never scrutinized before signing.

Plus, your wife paid a FEE to assist the nice, guy SCAMMER-SALESMAN in fleecing her.

Oh, get this, mate, some people even fall for the scam by "being hired to be a co-signer" to export luxury cars to China.

Dude, can you believe that?

Damn, dude, damn.
