I am an 18 year old college student who just got into trouble with the law no more than 3 hours ago. A group of friends and I were walking from my dorm to the football game. My friends were drinking prior to the walk to the stadium however, i was the only one carrying a red plastic cup (my first mistake) filled with 90% Fruit punch Gatorade and the remaining 10% was Vodka. It was a very weak mix with no taste or smell of liquor what so ever. I even smelled the drink when i made it and it didnt smell of alcohol at all. Anyways, i was walking down the sidewalk carrying my drink when i noticed a group of cops about 50-60 yards in front of a frat house filled with under aged and over aged people drinking alcohol. Noticing the cops, i set my cup down on the sidewalk and continued walking. Once i got next to the group of police officers, they asked us "which one was the one who put down the red cup back there?". I told him it was mine and he said "ok". He then asked me what i had in there and i told him what was in it (the truth). He ended up giving me an MIP and set my court date. He told me that i could have my drivers License revoked, possible community service time, or a class which i would be required to take. He also said i could fight it, plea innocent, or plea guilty. My quesiton is: Which should i do? Should I plea guilty or plea innocent? I do not have a lawyer nor do i have the money for one. Which one would be less costly (legal wise and financially)? And what are types of question they will ask me and what are some good responses to these questions? ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!! THANK YOU!!!

*******aLSO, THE COP SMELLED THE DRINK AND SAID THAT IT SMELLED REALLY STRONG***** HOW COULD HE TELL THAT???? WAS HE JUST MAKING IT UP?

Who were these cops ? are they campus security or city policemen ? Anyway , you will go to court . Plead guity or not it's up to you . Either way it gonna cost you , I should plead guity if I were you bcuz you might need a lawyer when you come to trial . Plead guilty you don't need a lawyer on the court day . It depend where you're staying each county has their own court systems some you only need to come there only one time others you need to come there 3 times ( arraigment, PSI, sentencing) . It won't be cheap depend on what county you are in . You have to pay fines and court cost ( $100-350) some judges may order you to report probation officer each month for a year under your probation ($600 right there)+ community services ( 25-50hrs) + attending LEAP class ($90) + MADD impact meeting ($30) . You'll be on probation for 1 year and your record wiil be clear for first time.
