My jurisdiction is: CA

A large corporate entity is sending me a bill and threatening to send me to a collection agency if I don't pay it. I am disputing this bill.
I dont' want to take a hit on my credit report, but not sure how to proceed.
Can I sue in small claims court, even though they want money from me, just to resolve the dispute?
Or do I wait until they take me to court (unlikely as the amount is under $500), which would likely involve a collection agency.

Or do I pay them and then take them to court to avoid the collection agency thing.
Problem is, paying them will directly affect how I sue them, since it will establish me as a "customer" and bound to their "customer agreement."
Any advice would be appreciated.

Can't give you an answer one way or another. I don't know the substance of the issue to know if you have a defense. If you do, then defend and create a paper trail. If you don't have a defense, then I'm not sure how you can avoid paying what you owe.
