Tenant not paying rent, how to make him leave

I had a guy move into my place for a short period 8+ weeks. We didn't do a written lease and I'm glad we didn't because he scares me and I want him out of my house. I'm so uncomfortable that a lot of times I don't even go home. Luckily on April 15th he said he would move out on May 15th. I told him that on May 1st he should write me a check to cover May 1st -15th but he didn't give me a check stating he didn't have the money. If he leaves on May 15th he's pretty much used up his security deposit but then I have nothing left if he damages anything when he leaves etc. My actual question/concern is...what if he just doesn't leave? What do I need to do now or on the 15th to get him out of my house? Please help me...I'm scared!

Because he has failed to pay rent, you can begin the process of eviction. The steps to do this vary from state to state.
