I was nearing the end of my lease in the downstairs of a strip mall plaza (almost empty). I renegotiated my lease with the landlord and 3 months later the landlord 'defaulted' or bankrupted the property. To my knowledge they never executed the renegotiated lease, thus causing me to be month to month with whomever took the property over. This new landlord met with me and stated they had no idea what plans they had for the old mall and that they would put me month to month until they made a decision. I never received any paperwork or signed any new aggreement so when rent time came I paid the amount that I renegotiated with the previous landlord (I do have these documents). Now they are sending me notices with rent due amounts that are even higher than my previous lease amounts! They are saying if not paid we will be in default.
Any expert advice is welcome. Pease keep in mind my current business is an 'installation' type business meaning it is VERY expensive to move and the mall plaza is 60% empty. Thanks in advance!

While a landlord can raise the rent frequently (i.e., even monthly) in a month to month tenancy, it's a bit hard for a tenant to send in the correct amount of rent if they've never been notified what this amount might be.

-Update-
Their response to me today was that a month to month lease assumes the previous lease terms since the renegotiated lease was never executed by the previous landlord. They are reviewing a resubmisson for a capped lease which we had already submitted and was apporoved by the last landlord.
