I was fired today from a retail job at a company called Store name. I was asked to sign, date, and time a piece of paper which I did not understand completely. It consisted if information concerning being asked questions about Loss Prevention and giving answers on my own volition (as far as i understood it). I spoke to man over the phone without the company of any managers or higher ups. I was explained to how the company loses money in various scenarios and eventually asked if I had stolen anything or used merchandise credit which I received through illegal means. I fessed up to stealing clothing and pocketing a coupon for my family. I admitted to being coerced by customers into giving coupons out, threatening to complain to my manger and create a scene. I explained why I stole (unfair wages, work a hard job with little reward, or room to move up in). The merchandise credit was ascertained through the return of pants that belonged to my girlfriend's dad. She does not shop at Store name and gave it to me. I used the merchandise credit in my home-store in a purchase which was rung up by a manager who did not say it was against policy to do so. I said I was more than willing to repay or bring back the items that very night. I left and returned within 20 minutes and gave the items to my manager in selling quality. I made a very poor decision. There was no evidence presented, and he LP rep alluded to cameras but never stated that there was footage of me doing wrong things. I was asked to write a statement saying that I was not "threatened or promised anything". I just fessed up because legal recourse was threatened if I did not choose to repay or give the items back. It totaled over 150 dollars, I live in Illinois, and I am 18. The man on the record said if I returned everything and went my separate ways I would not be bothered again nor would I be held legally responsible. This what i understood. I am nervous and worried and I want this to be over with. I'm on the road to becoming an attorney my self and do not want a record for something this blatantly idiotic.

For your protection the store name was removed. That being said I am not sure what your question is. It appears you were fired and that might be it. If you have a question about the theft we would be happy to answer it for you.

Does the Company reserve the right to bring up charges on me or am I in the clear since I returned everything in the condition it was taken in?

The company has until the statute of limitations runs out to file criminal charges. However if all items were returned and in saleable condition then I doubt they will pursue charges.

Note: We cannot say for certain

I understand why. I was told by peers and family to go my separate ways, and not bother any one at the store or Loss Prevention. It makes sense, but I have lingering concerns with being prosecuted. Is separating from my former employer and severing all contact the way to go?

Most stores do not seek Civil Demand from internals they just seek what they lost from former employee or through court restitution. But one cannot say for certain

If my former employers decide to file for legal action will it infringe with whatever agreements they made with me on the DVR and make their argument moot?

That was a hypothetical, now to wait one year for the statute of limitations run out, and find better things to do with my life than worry about cheap clothing and "sticking it to the man". Thank you for your help and time, a testimonial will be in order.

I highly doubt they will be pressing charges, especially since they did the interview over the phone. That means the LP guy was not able to get to the store in a reasonable amount of time to interview you and phone interviews were the best option. If he couldn't make it to interview you in person, why do you think he would go to court?

Also I do not know what kind of store this is, but hurry and try and get another job because they might put you in the national retail theft database.

Civil demand - iffy.
Civil Restitution - not if you returned the merchandise (restitution is to make the company whole from the loss)

Trespass from stores - definitely.
