I was terminted from my job because I was caught taking merchandise and selling it on ebay for my own personal profit. I went to a meeting the employer called to discuss payment back to them. Towards the end of our conversation I noticed I was being video taped without my consent. My co-worker, who was also terminated also noticed the camera recording our conversation. Is that a civil law being broken? So now they want me to pay upwards of $4.500 for the merchandise I sold. What can I do about the video taping?

Taping laws are state specific and you do not mention your state. But whether you were or were not taped does not alter the legality of your firing.

If you are guilty of what you were accused of, and I notice you do not deny it, being taped, EVEN IF ILLEGAL (and we do not know that it was) is the least of your problems and making an issue of it is more likely to backfire on you than not.

I would step lightly if I were you. It sounds like you have already admitted to stealing from your employer and frankly, you are lucky they didn't just have you thrown in jail.
