Good day. I hope I posted this in the right area.

My girlfriend was stopped by a driver who claims she scratched his car. She was pressed for time to get to work but stopped to looked at the small scratch on the right side of the bumper his bumper. She remembered passing the car, but did not think she touched the car in any way. Nevertheless, she gave the driver all of her info (license/insurance) and went to work.

The next day, the driver called and said it would be $1600 b/c the bumper would have to be replaced. He also demanded that she pay/follow up or else he would report it as a hit and run. He also mentioned he was a cop. All this over a scratch which I saw via a pict she took with her cell phone camera.

There is no police report and she really isn't sure if she scratched the car at all. She took a look at her car and doesn't see anything significant. Her car is old (and used) and had a number or scratches on it prior. What are her options?

It seems fishy to me.

ps: Why doesn't this guy just use touch up paint or something?

Sorry to hear about the problem. I'm a little confused as to how the driver stopped your girlfriend on the way to work. Bottom line is that she can tell him to take her to court and then he will have to prove it. I don't know what happened exactly but it doesn't sound like we have all the facts. If this is a story about a cop trying to pull a fast one then you may want to challenge him and see how he responds. After all, you do have a picture of his bumper?

My feeling is that we don't have all the facts and the best person to discuss it is your girlfriend...
