I am co-owner of a very small business in which I have a crew that enters customer homes and performes energy efficiency measures to reduce customer electricity costs. The energy efficiency program is sponsered by the public utilities and is a free service to the customer. Although the utilities sponser the program, they are not responsible for ANY damages that my crew may cause. Recently, we were contacted by a customer who claims they are missing a $2000 ring. The customer said she didn't notice the missing ring for about five days until after my crew left. She also said she really does not remember where she last took the ring off and set it down. She noted several places that it might have been (i.e. by the sink, on the cofffee table, on her dresser, etc.) but did not recall where she last saw it. I visited the house and although clean, it was extremely clutterd. So much that it would be very difficult to find a lost item. The customer seemed sincere and appeared to be an honest person but my crew has been with me long enough that I trust them. This has never been an issue before. The crew of course denied taking anything and remembered the cluttered house. The customer was going to continue to look for the ring. My question is do I take any action at all? Am I responsible to replace the value of the ring if the customer cannot find it? Should I have her file a police report and ask her to claim it on her insurance (I believe she mentioned that she had insurance). Do I offer to pay the deductible? This incident might hurt my business just a little bit but since it is a free program, it will recover quickly. I am more conserned about my legal obligation when accused of something like this. Any help would be appreciated.
