I live in South Florida and well over a year ago now I was caught stealing while working as a security guard. Now, I gave all of the items back I didn't even try to BS my way out of it I just fessed and got my slap on the wrists. My job fired me of course and told me that was that so I went on with the daily grind.
Now over a year later I've been contacted by a detective saying that the company that actually had the items taken from is pressing the matter further. Which I understand, it was the security firm that told me it was done not the actual victem of the crime. Now, the detective tells me that there were more things taken and that supposedly they were gone on the dates I was working there and apparently that's all they have, aside from the fact that I was caught.
Now, I know without a doubt that I was taped taking 1-2 of the items and not everything that I gave back, but I wasn't interested in taking chances anymore so I returned everything. So basically all they have as far as proof goes is the fact that I was caught and confessed, and dates claiming that they believe I took more.
The problem, and the question I have for this forum, is what the detective told me. He told me that it was a simple over-night deal. I come to him, he arrests me, I spend a night in jail and pay a $1000 fine and that's that. I get the record and that's that.
How legitimate is this? If the detective tells me that's all is going to happen, how great are the odds that I'll be dealing with much bigger concerns than he's letting me believe?
I'm not trying to dodge the offense, I just need to know if I should tell my employer that I might be gone for a few months instead of just the few hours this guy's leading me to believe.
