Theft by Contractor's Workers

Back at the beginning of March, my house flooded and I hired a contractor to repair the damage. The work was going to take several weeks, so I gave him the house key and let him come and go as he pleased. He finished up in about a month and I signed an agreement saying the work was good and that was it.

Now it is three months later. I have spent the weekend looking for 3 pieces of electronic equipment I know I had, and all I come up with is empty boxes. I am not blaming the contractor, but someone he had in the house had to have taken it. No one has been in my house since then. I live alone and I work long hours and I am rarely home. The things I am missing are not things I used very often (obviously!) but total about $500 in value. I know where they were stored, and they are missing.

Should I even bother calling the contractor? I don't see how I can prove anything, and at this late date would I even have a case against his company?

I wouldn't call the contractor. Too much time has passed and he won't accept any responsibility, nor should he. You wouldn't be able to prove anything.

I don't know how much good it would do, but I would still call the police and let them investigate. If they really try to pursue this they could have the boxes fingerprinted to start with, although that might be about all they can do. But I would check into it anyway.

Thanks for the replies! I know it has been a while, and I probably won't get anything out of it, but do you think the contractor would want to know that someone he hired might be stealing from customers?

It can't hurt you and can only possibly help you. Who knows, by chance the contractor may have recently fired the culprit for stealing from another customer. If this comes out in conversation, then this opens the door for you to submit your claim to the contractor!!
