My daughter and her friends decided to play a game of "Dare" one afternoon in a local Wal-Mart. They each picked up some small items of makeup which probably amounted to about $10-$15. They were stopped by loss prevention as they tried to exit the store and the local police were called. The policeman recognized my daughter and her friends because he also serves as security at their high school and knows that they are involved in various school organizations. He issued them a citation and told them that they could just probably just talk to the judge a little bit and he would probably let them off easily.

I'm concerned as to what may happen. Even though the items were very small, they still broke the law by stealing property. What should I expect to happen in court? Do they need a lawyer? Should they plead "not guilty"? Will this prevent them from getting jobs in the future?

Yes they need a Lawyer a conviction will harm chances for jobs, scholarships and more. Many Lawyers offer free consultations get as many as you can. When you meet with said Attorneys ask about diversion as possible plea option

Thanks for your response. Also, should they plead "not guilty"? I've often heard people say that you should never plead guilty in court.
