Hi, so I was caught stealing an item with a value of about $36 in Idaho. I'm 18 and this is my first run in with the law in any sort of way... The officer told me that typical sentencing for this is 6 days in jail, or a fine with probation.. I really DO NOT want to go to jail :( !!! He said he would put in a good word that I was very compliant and everything and he also advised me to plead not guilty in court so that I won't immediately be sentenced and will be able speak one on one with them later on, hopefully letting them put a good word in for me too so as not to get any jail time.. I know nothing about crimes and what the typical punishments are... So I was just wondering is it likely that I will be sentenced to jail??? And if not, about how much do you think the fine will be? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A first offense with no prior record jail is very very very (did I say very?) unlikely. What you need to do is start calling Lawyers even if you cannot afford one. Many offer free consultations get as many as you can. Ask them about your plea options and make special note to ask if ACD or Diversion is available in your case. You asked about fines your criminal fine will be less than $500.00 there might be other costs but that depend son possible classes court might want you to enroll in etc. Your civil fine (Civil Demand) should be around $250.00 give or take $50.00 to $100.00

Okay thank you. I also have one more question... Lets say I did get a fine... How long will i have to pay it off? And is there usually a payment method? I currently don't have a job and there is no way any family member of mine would help me pay for it.

Its not uncommon for people to make payment arrangments for one or both the civil and/or criminal fines. Just make sure you keep current on the payments or severe consequences can follow
