Here is the complete story.

I run a not-for-profit animal rescue. To pay our bills, I sell Yankee Candles on the internet. I buy these candles from a Yankee Candle outlet. I have been doing business with this outlet for 4 years without incident, until recently.

Last week I received two very large ($10,000) orders of candles, via UPS, that I did not order. One order was sent to my storage unit and name, athough the storage unit number was not on the "send to" address. I frequently receive orders of Yankee Candles, so the people at the unit assumed the order was mine and placed it in my unit. I later received a note card in the mail saying this order was a donation to the rescue. Our website lists the storage unit as the send to address for all donations.

The second order was designated to be delivered to a residence, however someone called and rerouted the order to my husband's place of business. The name on the order was not ours. A part-time employee signed for the delivery. About 1 hour later a man showed up saying that UPS had accidently delivered his packages here. Since the packages were not in our name, we let him take them. I was not there for any of this. This is what my husband was told by the PT employee who has since been fired.

A man from Yankee Candle's loss prevention department called and spoke with me. He told me that these orders had been placed through Yankee Candle's "web sale" system and that they had never been paid for. Nobody knows who placed the order or why they were sent to me. I agreed to return or to pay for the candles delivered to the storage unit. Let me clarify and say that I agreed to pay for these candles what I would pay at the outlet, which is bit below retail.

There was also a third order placed to a random address in NJ, however, this order was discovered and the company recalled it before it was ever delivered. Here's my problem. I am really worried. I think this whole thing is really creepy and weird. It makes me look really bad and I can tell that nobody believes me that someone came and picked up the second order. The police have called me and they want me to make a deposition. I cannot really afford a lawyer and I am scared to go to jail!

. . .

Err. Why would you go to jail? It's plausible someone else is making bad orders. If you didn't, I wouldn't worry. There should be a cash trail if you did. You can understand why the police would want to talk to you! People are out money, and it seems someone did this intentionally.

If you are in the right, don't worry. If after reading this you are still worried, talk to an attorney, and they should asuage your fears.

Good Luck to You.

I guess I am worried because the orders were sent to me. Also, it is a large amount of money and I don't have the second order to return. I am not sure how this works....
