Have a question, I have been indicted by a grand jury for theft of property. I haave my first court date coming up. Can I possibly talk to the people/person who charged me to try and get them to drop charges if possible or is it too late for that? The other is that can I possiblly reach a plea agreement with them where I won't do any time, or is it going to be mandatory time. (Thats if the first question is not possible.) Could you please give some advice on this for me? Thank you.

I am not a criminal lawyer but do know that this case now also involves the DA. I have heard cases where charges were dropped and I don't think that anyone wants to waste time to prosecute cases that all parties aren't really interested in pursuing and can't be worked out between each other. However, here there has already been work done in this case. A grand jury was assembled and a indictment returned. I don't know how a DA will act or even the aggrieved party and unless you have an ability to talk to this person it may hurt you in a court of law later if you try. Have you spoken to and/or are you represented by an attorney?

I cannot afford an attorney. I was going to ask for public defender. I think here in tenn. you have to fill out paperwork to see if you qualify for public defender.
