I was on told that i have to change my shift without notice due to the fact my sister works on the same shift. before i went on the shift my manager asked if i could move to this shift i asked if being brother and sister would be aloud he said yes. Not sure i went to HR and asked to see the employee handbook and asked is this really ok. Again they said it was fine because she was not in a supervisory position to me. I agreed to change shifts and now 7 months later they called both me and her to HR. They said i have to or she does as soon as possible. we asked why and they stated no reason we just want to prevent anything from possibly happening. we both explained that we were told by the same HR person that we were talking to then it was ok. Now me and her have to make a decison on who leaves to night shift. both have familly and cannot make the change both for finacial reasons and because of our spouses jobs. if we dont decide one of us will be fired. can they do this?

Yes, they can. The fact that they previously agreed to allow you to work on the same shift as your sister does not mean that they are obligated to allow it permanently.

They do not need your permission to change your shift. Unless you have a legally binding and enforceable contract that specifically says otherwise, they can arbitrarily change your shift any time they want to.
