I've seen countless instances on tv where criminals get off on technicalities, whether it be something the police did wrong or a typo on some form or another.

How often does this actually happen? I know its possible to get off if you're not read your rights and stuff, but what about the typos, do they count for anything?

You are grossly misinformed. Not reading you your rights is not likely going to get your case tossed in a shoplifting stop. There isnt even a need to question you. You can of course hire an Attorney and attempt to fight your charge. If your lucky you win and case is tossed. If your not (most likely) expect Judge to throw the book at you. TV is not a good legal resource!

I wasn't exactly asking about the cop reading rights thing, just using it as an example. I just wanted to know what kinds of legal technicalities there are and if a small mistake in the police report counts as one. I figured I'd ask here first before pointing it out to a lawyer and looking like an idiot.

Ok so what is the small mistake you assume will get your case tossed? Keep in mind if you hire a lawyer to fight charge this will cost you thousands whether you win or lose and if you lose expect Judge to give you the max sentence!

First of all, I'm hiring a lawyer whether I fight the case or not. Second, I'm not assuming anything, I'm asking. I would like to be as informed as possible before I consult with a lawyer.

And the tiny mistake was referring to me as a 'he' instead of a 'she'.

I'm definately not banking my entire future on this. I'd just rather have people I will never know think I'm stupid than the person who will be defending me.

He instead of she will not get your case tossed. There are several things that will work against you the big one will be any video of you stealing. Your legal advice should come from the Attorney you hire. We can help you understand the laws and give you benefit of our knowlege but we are nto lawyers

Buy a lottery ticket. You'll have the same chances at winning "Mega Millions" as you will your case being thrown out due to some technicalities.
ESPECIALLY if they have video of you.
