I work and live at a motel, and I have had a problem with the people next door. They have three kids, around 6, 2, and 8-9 months. The children are left out on the balcony by themselves everyday, monday thru friday between 3pm and 8pm, and sat sunday between 9 am and 8pm. The parents are in their room with the curtains shut, and the door closed. I work the graveyard shift, so I have to sleep during the day, and this is the main reason I am worried about it, as well as the fact that it is neglect. I informed my boss of everything, and told her that I was contemplating calling DCF. She told me that I could not call DCF, or the police for that matter, otherwise I would be fired, and lose my place to live. She said that even if someone was beating their wife right in front of me I could not call the police or i would lose my job. I want to know if this is legal for them to fire me if I called DCF, or the police. Also, I was under the impression that reporting abuse, or neglect to DCF was confidential. Want to make sure, before I do anything, and now even if I do nothing, if someone else calls they may think it was me, and fire me. Any advice would be appreciated. I know that it is wrong what they are telling me with out a doubt, however I am entirely uncertain about the legality of it. also, I was talking about this, and going to do this on my own time not theirs, if that matters.

Seek legal counsel before you do anything. There is such a thing as "public policy" and firing you for doing the right thing in this case MAY give you a wrongful termination case.

Patricia Young gave you excellent advice. I'd only add a couple more tidbits.

Anyone is free contact DCF and make an anonymous complaint. The same can be said for the police.

Slavery was abolished in 1863 with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, followed by the 13th amendment in December of 1865. If I were you, I'd pursue other employment opportunities. Your "boss" behaves more like a "massa"!
