I purchased a '77 Chevy from my Grandmother's estate after she passed away in January. I picked the vehicle up from Georgia and returned to Virginia in March. My Uncle (the executor/trustee/whatever) provided me a copy of the bill of sale. He said that he had not yet had time to transfer the vehicle title to the estate from my grandmother's name and he would do so when he had the time off work and then mail it to me.

He recently called me from the clerk of court's office (where vehicle registrations and titles are handled in GA) saying the guy behind the counter said all I would need to register the vehicle in VA was the Bill of Sale, the "Trustee Document", and an expired registration in my Grandmother's name. I expressed my skepticism that that would work across state lines but my uncle said he asked the guy the same question and was told there would be no problems.

I was unable to find any reference to this information online.

Can anyone confirm what my Uncle was told and told me?

Thanks!

Registration is relatively easy in most states, even without titles.

Registration isn't ownership, however.
Call your licensing agency in VA and ask.

What you eventually want is the title.

That shows ownership.

In most states, a 30 year old vehicle is eligble for collector or antique plates.

They are free (or cheaper) in many states.

You should investigate that possibility, too.
