I just got suspended from work for internal theft. I am terrified over here. Not because of getting fired, but because they have the right to prosecute me.
Here is the story:
I stole sodas and candy from the warehouse over the course of many months. The total dollar amount stolen should be about... $40-50.
After admitting to stealing them, I signed their forms. I also offered to pay them the full amount for the soda/candy, and they happily accepted that. I don't believe it went as high as $60, but I paid them that much anyways just to be safe. I don't remember how much the dollar amount taken is exactly..

So I signed the forms, gave my statement/apology/explanation on the form(s), and the $60 payment.
I am now suspended from work with pay, and I am 100% sure that I will be fired. That, I can live with.
I saw that coming, and am prepared to deal with that.
However, I am terrified that they may press criminal charges against me. I have been reading a lot about this online, and have read that very few of these internal thieves actually end up being prosecuted, but I am not sure.

What can I expect (besides being fired)? With the amount stolen (about 40-50 dollars), are my chances of being prosecuted high?

I am in NO way defending my actions. What I did was wrong, and I told them that. I am just very scared of being charged. Please give me your input on this situation?
If I wasn't clear about something in this post, please let me know, and I will edit it based on your suggestions/questions.

Thank you very much.

Not sure what your reading but mos tinternal cases "are" prosecuted! However they accepted your money and have been made whole! Hopefully that is in writing as well. Since you payed for stolen items I don ot believe they will file criminal charges but only time will tell. However if they are subscriber to any retail theft database your name will likely be in there, this can keep you from future jobs in retail

Yes, I wrote down that I paid them the money, and the transaction is done. The sheet that I signed stated that I paid them $60 for all that was taken. (That would easily cover it).

I am fully aware that I may not be able to work retail anymore (I have other options). So me being fired, and possibly the inability to work retail any further are expected.

I have never been charged of a crime in my life until this, and I am a 20 year old college student.

UPDATE:
Alright. I was called in already, so I figured it wasn't too bad.
Yes, they fired me. No criminal charges, no police involvement and no including me in a retail database or whatever it is called.

I was going to quit that job anyways for I am looking for something more flexible for this school year, so I am not too upset about this. I have definitely learned my lesson, and will not repeat those actions again.

My thanks to those two who answered/replied. Your time is appreciated.
I'm just glad this is over.

Glad things worked out and we could help. Please refer this site to others as needed. Quick question though how do you know they will not input your name in retail theft database? That is pretty much a given for all theft cases prosecuted or not.

They did not specifically say, and to be honest, I am not 100% sure that they won't. But they told me that I was terminated, and there will be no criminal charges, no police involvement, no fines, and that this will in no way affect the rest of my life. This mainly was due to me telling them the truth, and paying them back the money, plus extra.

That last piece about not affecting the rest of my life made me think that maybe they didn't include me in such a database. But of course, I could be wrong. If they did, then it's not so bad. I no longer wish to work retail anyways. I have other opportunities.

"If" your former employer is a subscriber to said database then there is a 90% or better chance your now in there. However as you already noted this should not impact you in any way

I answered your PM. The best way to find out is to actually contact the people who interviewed you and see what they have to say as it pertains to this incident. You have a right to know if they are going to submit something negative to this database.

If this site was any help to you at all please post something in our testimonial section and refer others as needed
