I applied for the unemployment insurance in the early March this year. The EDD informed me that I am not qualified for the UI because I was working as a self-employed status. I do not think this is a resonable and acceptable because working as self-employed I still have to pay the state and federal taxes.

I am wondering is it a law in California? Thanks

Did you (as an employer) pay into unemployment? Were funds taken from your check and put into unemployment state fund under your name? Unemployment is monies paid into state you can access if you become unemployed. However if you did not pay into fund you have no funds to access. Its not welfare or any of the give a way programs. Its like car insurance you pay into it and if needed you use those funds. thats why its called unemployment "insurance"

As far as I know, no state provides unemployment insurance to those who were self-employed.
