My jurisdiction is: Alabama

Last year my company hired a new plant manager. This manager came in and immediately began making changes. Some good and some were questionable. At the time I was employeed with this company I was the HR Manger. My job was to be this guys right hand man. After about two or three days of this new plant manager being there he began hinting that some of the supervisors would not be there much longer. A week after he was there, I went on a business trip and behind my back and without my consent or involvment this manager hired one of his former incumbents "his buddy". A slap on the wrist was given to him by the VP of HR for not having me involved but everything rolled on. About a month later the plant manager fired a supervisor for cause. Without following proper job posting policies he hired another former incumbent "buddy". Things rolled on. Another couple of months went on and without any notice, I was called to sit on on another firing of a senior supervisor "without cause". This supervisor was previously "promised a promotion to Production Manager. After this firing the plant manager promoted his "buddy". Things rolled on. Months rolled on and it was performance appraisal time. I was told by the VP of HR that some expectations in HR have changed and my appraisal would be delayed in order for me to get acclamated to the new changes. Three months later I was told by the VP of HR that I was developing and growing well to the new expectations and I was doing a good job. Last month I was called into the plant managers office and terminated "without cause". During this down economy, the plant managers former HR Manager lost his job due to a plant closing and this person will now fill my spot. There is also been negotiations with another former employee of the plant manager to fill the spot of an unsuspecting employee. I fully understand laws conserning right to work, and Alabama is a right to work state, but when someone comes in and eliminates most all management with his past employees and "buddies", does this not show some form of favoritism. Do you think I have a case? What steps should I take to make my case if there is one?

You were the HR manager? A few things you might want to keep in mind for your next job -

1.) Right to work means you do not have to join the union to get work. It has nothing to do with this situation

2.) All states with the exception of Montana (and even including Montana in some circumstances) are employment at will states, meaning that you can be fired for any reason that does not specifically violate the law, just as it also means you can quit at any time

3.) Favoritism is not illegal unless it is based in a characteristic protected by law.

4.) Being or not being someone's buddy is not a characteristic protected by law

5.) Based on the information in your post, you do not have anything resembling a legal "case". Unfair is not illegal.
