I have been working for a restaurant for about 8 months now. I have been a valued employee and just this weekend was promoted to be a "captain" of catered events. In that I will be paid more and I have more responsibilities. This restaurant has a very laid back feeling. We wear what we would like and everyone jokes around. In a regular workplace many of the comments between fellow employees and manager/employees would be deemed inappropriate but everyone at the restaurant is open and understands the nature of all comments and actions. My manager and co-owner of the restaurant is dating the catering manager of the restaurant the woman who just promoted me this weekend. For reasons that are unfounded in truth the catering manager believed me to be involved with the manager/owner romantically. Saying that we were seen in the mezzazine "talking". I was being instructed about cleaning up after the party we were catering. As I was just promoted I had many questions, I wanted to do my job correctly. My manager owner and catering manager then got into a fight in which the manager owner was kicked out and this morning I was fired and not allowed back in the restaurant because his relationship was in trouble and he couldn't afford to have me around. Nothing has ever happened. The entire staff would back me up on how unfounded these claims are. I was offered to be refered to unemployment or to be on the waiting list at the other restaurant location to "cover shifts". I feel that firing a good employee (the promotion as proof) on grounds such as those is illegal. I was told I wasn't allowed to come get my money from the Brooklyn location and had to get the rest of my money from the TriBeca location. What do I do?
