Hi I live in the state of Virginia and I now have a 2month old baby girl. Her father and I are not together and were never married. At the hospital he did voluntarily sign her birth certificate. He has just been charged with distribution and I don't want the kind of thing around her. Am I required to allow him visits? In regards to custody what are my rights as an unwed single mother?

Without a custody/visitation order you really dont have to allow him time with his child. However if he seeks one it could be granted. It would be in yours and childs best interest that you seek one right away. In your request you can seek Dad have supervised visits only. Its unlikely he will get no visitation so this is your best option. For now though since there is no court order you may deny him visitation with no consequences

It is too late to decide that. The decision should have been made before getting knocked up. If he pursues custody/visitation or you file for gov't services, expect the issue to be at the forefront, once paternity is established.
