Naturalization, Citizenship US Citizen engaged to Canadian Citizen

I am a US Citizen and I'm engaged to a Canadian. I want to know if it is legal for him to come to the US to visit and we marry and then fill out all the paperwork to allow him to stay permanently? We've been told by a few people that we should just marry & then start the process. Others have told us that this is completely illegal and he could be deported until we have all the paperwork approved. Any help from anyone on this? We've known each other for over 9 years and have met in person. Thanks for any help

The easiest way by far is by filing for a K1 fiance visa. It's not an overly difficult process and there is some great information here:
