I'm 18, I have been employed for 2 years and recently I made a mistake, used a co-workers credit card on two different occasions. The total added up to 70 exactly. I told her what I had did and she contacted the police and loss prevention. A detective came to my house and asked me to meet with him. I met him today and he had a statement from a manager who said I used the credit card twice and bought gift cards, 1 each time I used the card totaling up to 70 dollars. I agreed and told him this was all true. He told me I was charged with theft (he said something else after theft that I did not hear) and that he would contact me at the end of this week or the beginning of next week and I would go back and meet with him I'm assuming get arrested and go to court. He also said it's unlikely that I have to do jail time, he said I'll probably have to pay fines and go on probation. I would just like to know what I am being charged with and what a probable punishment is going to be. I have a completely clean record, just finished high school, have some college credits, and planned on joining the National Guard. How bad will this effect my chances of joining the army, and how much trouble do you think I am in? Any advice will help, thank you very much.

Your BIG mistake was confessing. Dont make anymore consult an Attorney and talk to him no other. When you talk to this Attorney ask if ACD or Diversion is a possible option for you. If not the National Guard may be gone for you

Agreed. Do not speak with the police anymore. Politely tell them that you have been advised to speak only with an attorney. You do not need to run out right away and get an attorney, but you can if you wish. You can wait until you go to court (you will eventually receive a notice) and request that an attorney be appointed at that time. I doubt you will be arrested. it is more likely that once a warrant is issued you will receive a citation ordering you to appear in court.

The charges appear to be as you stated- theft. Two counts. These are two separate misdemeanor offenses.
The likely outcome is as you already stated, fines and probation, however with an attorney's help you may be able to minimize it further so you do not jeopardize you eligibility for the National Guard.
