Hi there, if a child is six years old, does the mother have to have a separate room for him in order to be granted visitation rights?

I can't think of any state that says its okay for a six year old child to sleep with a parent. A child needs his or her own room.

Unless the court order mandates it, I do not see why it would be a requirement. I can think of situations where a child does NOT have their own room in homes right now. Whether a court would see this room of their own as a requirement to allow visitation would likely revolve largely on the age of the child.

If need be, the parent sleeps on the couch for visitation and gives up his or her room to the child for the duration of the visitation.

Bottom line, unless the court requires it, then it is not a requirement.

AJ, there is no such requirement in any state that I'm aware outside of foster/state care situations.

Seriously - parents can retain primary custody having their TEENS sleeping in the bed while the parent sleeps in a sleeping bag in the same room.

Now sleeping in the same bed might be an issue once the child gets older. But even then, many parents can be the CP with their 6 year old sleeping in the same bed.

Heck my 7 year old grandchild has crawled in with gramma and grampa (when he stays over) if he's had a bad dream.

No law against it - in any state.

Yes, but this is the boyfriend asking about sleeping arrangements.
A solution where the child sleeps on the couch is a separate room works, or the parent on the couch. I don't dispute that. That said, I don't think the court would approve of the child in the room with parent and new mate.

Thanks for all the feedback. No the child wont be sleeping in the same bed or room with us. He can have out room and we can use the queen size air mattress in the living room. The father will maintain custody. She just wants to have him on weekends when it is her turn.

No, the child would not be sleeping in the same bed with us. He could have the bedroom and we could use an air mattress in the living room. We will be getting into out own place around August.
