Hi,

On a random bag check at work I was caught with a loaf of bread, milk and bagels. There were 2 of them to check and witness. They took a photo of what was taken and said that there would be a loss prevention investigation officer that will contact me this week for an interview. The police werent called when I asked if they were going to come and deal with me. They said its up to loss prevention now.

Im scared of what will happen. What should I expect and what should I do. Its not a unionized job, I work there on a casual basis and this is the first and last time I do something so stupid/wrong.

You're likely to lose your job, but common sense told you that, my friend.

As you said, you've learned a valuable lesson and got a tad lucky.

No cops involved, so thank your lucky stars you'll remain free.

Think about the exchange you made, less than $10 worth of junk for a job paying oodles more.
It might be even greater when you see that obtaining smilar employment in the future will be all but impossible.

Good luck.

I am a Retail Theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. I have conducted these interviews as well. Don't count on keeping your job! What they want is a confession on your part. Whether you give it or not they already know what they are going to do. Make no admissions and sign no documents unless completely satisfied with what document states. They can legally lie to you so dont trust anything unless its in writing. Like I said what they are after is an admission or confession on your part. they want to cross their "Ts" and dot their "Is" You are not obligated to give them this even if everything stated is true.

Im scared... really scared that the cops may still be involved, it sounded like they may be called in, after the interview.

It wasnt worth it at all. Its something I have to live with for the rest of my life, I dont think that matters to them. If all I lost was my job. I would consider myself lucky.

it feels like my world should be over

Yes they have that option which is another reason not to blab! Remember you have obligation to admit to or sign anything so dont. If you must ( I dont see that being a must) read what you sign carefully and if you make a statement make sure its your words not theirs. Many Loss Prevention professionals will tell the subject what to write and have him/her sign it. Its not your words its theirs.

No need to be afraid of police. At this point you couldn't be arrested anyway. You have no obligation to talk to them. If they should ever come (not likely in this case) you should be conveniently unavailable for the rest of your life.

Hi again,

The manager called and set up a time and date for the meeting. Someone is coming from out of town for that meeting. It is off site and will be the three of us.

I'm scared and don't want to go, what will happen if I dont make that meeting.

I'm wondering what kinds of questions to expect and would like help with the Dos and Donts for the meeting.

Can I just say that i made a bad decision and will resign?

Thanks for your time

We cant say what will happen if you dont go. they might file criminal complaint or just fire you and leave it at that. We cant really say. If you do go you are under no obligation to answer any question.

This what you told us initially:

I suspect the guest from another city is a company security investigator.
You could appear and simply say you have nothing to say.
You're going to probably be fired anyway, so you could simply mail your resignation letter and avoid the angst.
I don't see the police getting involved over a lag of bread and a quart of milk.
Common sense says the company isn't bring an investigator from out of town for nothing.
They got the allegedly purloined goods, now it appears they wanna get the goods on you, mate.
