I had a buddy ask Mr to return something got him while he was using the bathroom he said it was right by the bathroom in a cart so I walk in and return the item for Jim it was sitting just where he said it was and same item he explained to me. the cashiers at customer service approved it and gave me a gift card for the item the list prevention employee stopped me at the door and restrained me until the police got there and arrested me for theft and I am not sure if I should be charged with the theft

You appear in court on the date instructed and at the time instructed.
You plead not guilty.
You don't try to explain why, ask why, or in any shape, manner, or form answer any questions about your charge.

You ask one question, when the judge allows, "Your honor, do I qualify for a public defender?"
That is, if you don't plan to hire your own lawyer.

Yes Betty happens all the time but no cash is given just a store gift card.

Some places will not but I guess it depends on the place & what you are returning.

Its not uncommon to return an item that still has tags or is sold in store without receipt and customer is given a gift card or store credit.
